Feeling down, denizens of Honolulu? Gallup says you should actually feel pretty good.

A new analysis says urban Honolulu has the second-highest “well-being index” score in the country.

The Florida community of North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton came in first among the 100 most populous areas that were surveyed.

In last place, says Gallup, are Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, Ohio-Pennsylvania; Toledo, Ohio; and Knoxville, Tennessee.

Feeling good. Feeling Honolulu.

What makes a community have a high level of well-being? These things:

  • liking what you do each day and being motivated to achieve your goals
  • having supportive relationships and love in your life
  • managing your economic life to reduce stress and increase security
  • liking where you live, feeling safe and having pride in your community
  • having good health and enough energy to get things done daily

In fact, when it comes to financial well-being, Gallup says Honolulu is No. 1.

What makes communities Debbie Downers? Not having someone to encourage healthy choices, experiencing food insecurity, smoking tobacco, being obese, not liking what you do and not feeling pride in your community.
