U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz, the Democrat from Hawaii, issued the following statement after the Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved the Iran Nuclear Review Act by a vote of 19-0:
“I am supportive of the bipartisan legislation that the Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved today. I am satisfied that this legislation will not interfere with the Administration’s ability to negotiate a diplomatic solution while clarifying the congressional prerogative and obligation to weigh in at the appropriate time and in the appropriate manner.
“After reviewing the framework announced by President Obama and Secretary Kerry, I am inclined to support it. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity, and I believe that our best chance for success in dealing with Iran’s nuclear program is through diplomacy.”

Hawaii’s other senator and Democrat, Mazie Hirono, has not yet expressed her public view on the legislation.
In other developments Tuesday, President Barack Obama has signaled that he can accept the Iran bill.
Still, there are some who are not happy with the compromise plan from Sen. Bob Corker, the Republican from Tennessee.
“At best, the legislation will give Tehran more leverage in the talks, they argue,” says The Hill. “At worst, although far less likely, it could scuttle the negotiations completely.”
