By a vote of 400-25, the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday sent legislation to President Obama that calls for congressional oversight of a nuclear deal with Iran.

Reps. Tulsi Gabbard and Mark Takai of Hawaii were in the majority on the vote.

The two Democrats also voted against a Republican-backed amendment to the annual defense bill that rejects allowing illegal immigrants from serving in the U.S. military — a measure that passed narrowly.

“Divisions between ardent GOP opponents of illegal immigration and vulnerable Republicans who represent districts with large Hispanic constituencies flared in the 221-202 vote,” The Hill reports. “Twenty Republicans voted with all Democrats in opposition of the amendment from Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) that killed the immigration language.”

In other news on Capitol Hill Thursday, the U.S. Senate voted “to advance a motion to begin debate on the core of President Obama’s trade agenda, putting it back on track after a week of deadlock,” The Hill reports. “In a 65-33 vote, the Senate agreed to proceed to a package that would empower Obama to negotiate future trade deals with minimal interference from Congress and assist U.S. workers displaced by foreign competition.”

Democrats Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz voted against the measure, but 13 Democrats voted in favor of moving the bill. Labor groups and other liberal constituencies fear the trade bill will cost American jobs.
