Eight U.S. senators are trying to persuade President Barack Obama to put a woman on the $20 bill.

Mazie Hirono of Hawaii was among those sending a letter to the president signed by her and seven Democratic colleagues.

“For more than 200 years, our paper currency has been reserved exclusively for men who have shaped our history,” the senators wrote. “That’s why the time has come to honor the contributions that women have made to our society, and reaffirm that women will be an important part of our future.”

President Andrew Jackson, remover of Indians and destroyer of banks, currently graces the $20 bill.

The lead author of the Senate letter, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), also backed the “Women on 20s campaign,” which announced in May that “abolitionist Harriet Tubman had won its online poll of who should replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill,” says The Hill.

Patsy Mink, the late U.S. representative from Hawaii, was among those whose names were considered in the poll.
