Honolulu ranks among the 10 “best cities” in the country for job hunters, according to Fortune magazine.
The city scored high in the magazine’s ranking for having a low unemployment rate: As of April, Honolulu’s unemployment rate stood at 3.6 percent — the 10th-lowest among the 100 largest U.S. cities.
As Fortune explains, a low employment rate is a boon to those looking for jobs: “It’s basic economics: The more people that are employed, the fewer available to an employer for a given position. The fewer candidates available, the poorer the employer’s bargaining position. … Hiring managers can’t as easily say, ‘Thank you — next!’”
Two cities in Nebraska — Lincoln and Omaha — topped Fortune’s ranking, with unemployment rates of 2.1 percent and 2.8 percent, respectively. They were followed by Austin, Texas, with an unemployment rate of 3 percent.
All of the top 10 cities have an unemployment rate below 4 percent — far lower than the national average of 5.5 percent in May.
