For data wonks, journalists and the just plain curious, the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism has just published online its annual State of Hawaii Data Book.
Among the interesting factoids in the 2014 edition are these items:
-
Hawaii’s out-of-state inmate population in 1997 numbered 300, or 6.5 percent of the state’s total incarcerated people. By 2014, that figure was 1,268 — or 22.1 percent of the total.
-
Honolulu ranks third nationally in car rentals, behind New York City and West Palm Beach, Fla., but ahead of Fort Meyers, Fla. It’s $106 a day on average. By comparison, it’s a mere $23 a day for a rental in Phoenix.
- When it comes to life expectancy, it was 54 years for both sexes nationally in 1920 and 46 years for both sexes in Hawaii. By 2000, the U.S. average was 77 years while Hawaii’s average was 80 (with women locally outliving men by six years.)
