Hilda is now a tropical storm in the Central Pacific moving slowly south of the islands, says our media partner KITV, as of 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
A tropical storm watch has been in effect for Hawaii County. That means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours.
“A flash flood watch is also up for the Big Island,” says KITV’s weatherman Pete Caggiano. “Hilda is forecast to weaken but bring abundant moisture across the Big Island beginning Wednesday night through Friday night with possible heavy rain and flash flooding.”
Winds are near 45 mph with higher gusts. Watch out for the ocean swells, too.
The storm is expected to become a tropical depression Wednesday night or on Thursday and a “remnant low” by Thursday evening.
