Veterans in Hawaii have the third highest incomes in the country, according to new estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.
The estimates, issued for Veterans Day, show that more than 112,000 veterans of military service are living in Hawaii — about 10.5 percent of the state’s population aged 18 or older. They have a median household income of $85,352, behind only to those in Maryland and Alaska.
Nationwide, 21.4 million veterans have a median household income of $61,884.
Hawaii was also home to 593 homeless veterans — a rate of 52.7 per 10,000. That’s more than twice as high as the nationwide homeless rate of 23.3 per 10,000 veterans.
The census estimates also show that 9 percent of Hawaii’s veterans are women, that their unemployment rate is 5.1 percent and that the state has 11,297 veteran-owned businesses.
