Thousands of high school graduates in Hawaii missed the chance to get federal Pell Grants for college last year, according to a study released last week by the website NerdWallet.
Roughly 45 percent of high school graduates in Hawaii didn’t fill out an application for student aid in 2014 — on par with the national average.
Students could be missing out on a sizable chunk of cash. Of the 5,853 students who didn’t fill out the FAFSA, NerdWallet estimates 2,847 would have been eligible for a grant. The average Pell Grant last year was $3,599.
