Karen Awana Running For Office?

The former Hawaii House representative, a Democrat, has pulled papers for her old seat, now held by Republican Andria Tupola.

Karen Awana, a Democrat, has pulled papers with the state Office of Elections for her former District 43 seat in the Hawaii House of Representatives.

She also has a fundraiser scheduled for Wednesday at St. Andrew’s Priory, where the suggested donation is $100.

Awana, who was fined thousands of dollars in recent years by the state Campaign Spending Commission for various filing violations, lost re-election by a wide margin to Republican Andria Tupola in 2014.

Tupola is the first state legislator to have filed for re-election this campaign season.

The Leeward Oahu district represents Ewa Villages, Kalaeloa, Ko Olina, Nanakuli and Maili.

Tupola is the former minority floor leader in the House and a current minority policy leader. Awana is a former majority floor leader.
