A man charged with murdering his mother last week in Maili on Oahu’s Leeward Coast is employed as a guard at the Oahu Community Correctional Center.
The Honolulu Police Department has confirmed with the Department of Public Safety that the suspect in the Friday afternoon shooting is Anthony Pereira, who worked as an adult corrections officer at OCCC.
DPS said Pereira has not reported to work since April 10 and has been on leave without pay since then.

“Our concern is with the grieving family at this time,”Public Safety Director Nolan Espinda said in a press release Monday. “The Department of Public Safety is conducting an internal administrative investigation and will continue to monitor and assist the Honolulu Police with their criminal investigation into this devastating matter.”
Pereira, according to KITV, is charged for “murder in the second degree, promoting a dangerous drug, kidnapping, terroristic threatening and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. His bail has been set at $1 million.”
The report adds, “Court records indicate that a temporary restraining order was taken out against him several years ago.”
Pereira, who was hired by DPS in August 2002, is currently being held at OCCC and will be transferred to Halawa Correctional Facility later Monday.
