The state Department of Health has cleared Genki Sushi restaurants on Oahu and Kauai to reopen after the establishments “completed extensive sanitizing of their facilities, disposal of potentially affected items, and medical screening of employees for Hepatitis A.”

That comes from a press release Friday.

The restaurants, said DOH, have “thoroughly completed health department requirements and are ready to reopen safely for food service operations.”

DOH had closed the restaurants Aug. 16 after deciding there was a link between frozen scallops served raw at the facilities and cases of Hep A.

“Serving safe, high-quality food is always our top priority and we deeply regret that the ongoing investigation by the Department of Health is indicating that customers may have become ill from a food product that our restaurants on Oahu and Kauai received from a distributor,” said Mary Hansen, chief administrative officer for Genki Sushi USA, in a statement from the company.

The 10 Oahu stores are set to open Saturday while the Kauai store will open at a later date following renovations.

The sickenings have led to the filing of a class action lawsuit.
