Count Mazie Hirono among those calling on President-elect Donald Trump to reject Steve Bannon.
The chairman of Breitbart News has been named chief strategist in the White House.
Hirono said:
“What Steve Bannon believes is not a mystery. He has demeaned women, advocated for white supremacy, and promoted anti-Semitism. “In addition to saying that immigrants spread disease, [his website Breitbart] has advocated a religious test for immigration. As an immigrant and a religious minority, this isn’t a test that I would have passed. “Quite frankly, it’s sad that we are having a debate about whether a white supremacist should serve as a senior counselor to the President-elect.”
Hirono is a Democrat in the U.S. Senate, the only immigrant currently serving in that body and currently the only woman of color.
