Politics, policy and public affairs as seen through the eyes of our political cartoonists.
(Will Caron/Civil Beat/2025)
Civil Beat has been covering the various corruption cases in Honolulu since 2014, when former HPD Chief Louis Kealoha and his deputy prosecutor wife, Katherine, were accused of trying to set up her uncle for theft of a mailbox, a federal crime. The FBI and special prosecutor investigations into abuse of the public trust in Honolulu eventually spread to the county prosecutor’s office and into Honolulu Hale itself. That final case recently ended with the news that the former Corporation Counsel, managing director and chair of the Honolulu Police Commission would concede to minor charges. Sentencing still to come.

Love it! The mainstream paper here protected Caldwell and his dastardly deeds. I thought that the feds would save us from his rail fail but they continued to fund it. He was definitely one of the worst with regard to corruption. (or best but definitely top of that list) Good for Civil Beat for keeping him in the "spotlight". Some of his horrid programs come alive from existing departments. Blangiardi should put a halt to the unnecessary spending of our tax dollars.

Caldwell may hope that no investigation follows him as he exits stage right, and that spray-painting "the end" guarantees that outcome, but it only means the end of him ever trying to run again for a public office.Maybe he can work for Elon Musk. No ethics required there.
