The issue is not a one-to-one equivalence of ICE to earlier forms of the KKK. The underlying point is the through line in American culture of racism. The dark underside of a constitutional democracy with its world-transforming ideals about equality under laws is a persistent problem that we are apparently unable to acknowledge. The shooting deaths of two citizens in Minneapolis, and the behavior of the federal government in the aftermath, should by themselves make it clear that ICE is not a legitimate enforcement agency. The image of a gun drawn on a child is simply another version of innocent lives that remain under threat.Only the courts, and people protesting in the streets, have been any sort of push-back against such blatantly unconstitutional behaviors.Whatever one might think about the myriad issues entangled in the cartoon---like immigration, foreign criminals, or the difficult role that proper law enforcement officers face every day---the Hawaii legislature should be commended for the set of bills being considered that also push-back on the excesses of ICE. If only Congress would find its nerve to do the same.

White hood replicating the Klu Klux Klan is a far reach. Illegal immigrants breaking the law coming into the country illegally is nowhere in the ballpark of foundation black americans hanging from trees, genitals amputated and being burned alive just for legally being. Not comparable AT ALL!

With all this anger aimed at immigrants today I wondered about my family tree. How many generations back to find a family member who was an immigrant to America? Not many, it was my paternal grandfather. He and my grandmother speaking no English left their families in Prague to farm in rural Wisconsin.Today would I ostracize him as a criminal, without a trial? Would I grant him a path to citizenship? What about his children born in the US, my father being one of his six?
