The case kicks off what is likely to be years of litigation over the public health crisis caused by the Navy on Oahu.

But the technology to filter petroleum isn’t quite there yet.

Inspectors from the Environmental Protection Agency found potential violations of federal and state safe drinking water rules.  

The water utility said it detected petroleum contamination beyond the military’s Red Hill property.

The Navy and Hawaii’s Department of Health stood by their findings that the water is now safe after last year’s contamination crisis.

The Navy says officers who are removed from leadership posts may be reassigned to positions consistent with their training and experience.

A Navy official promised to provide a new plan by next month.

The governor called video of a fuel spill at Red Hill, which was not previously released by the Navy, “shocking.”
