Power outages hit most of Kauaʻi and schools on Kaua‘i, Niʻihau and O‘ahu closed Tuesday as Lowell passed Hawaiʻi.

After the storm, remote neighborhoods from Ocean View to ʻĀhualoa were largely left to deal with the damage on their own.

This year’s storms have been disastrous for some Oʻahu residents immobilized by their building’s broken elevators. Restoration could take weeks or months. 

Kaʻū residents are bringing a new level of scrutiny to the hills above Nāʻālehu after Hurricane Lala prompted questions about the aging water systems above the town.

Most of the pumps that deliver water from wells stopped working when the electricity was cut off. The county lacks emergency generators to run them all.

They allege an unkempt stream and inadequate drainage from Lake Wilson caused the flooding of their homes.
