Mazie Hirono is celebrating her 68th birthday next month, and friends are being encouraged to give her “gifts” ranging from $250 to as much as $2,700.

The latter figure is the maximum individual contribution to a candidate per election.

Hirono, a U.S. senator, does not face re-election for another three years, but supporters appear to want to help her out now.

They’re holding a birthday celebration Nov. 23 at Vino Italian Tapas and Wine Bar at Restaurant Row.

Party hosts include state Senate President Ron Kouchi, state House Speaker Joe Souki, Senate Ways and Means Chair Jill Tokuda, House Finance Chair Sylvia Luke, lobbyist Bob Toyokuku, attorney Jeff Watanabe, Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii head Sherry Menor-McNamara, HMSA executive Tim Johns and Irene Hirano Inouye.

A Democrat, Hirono raised a modest $115,800 in the latest reporting period and had $397,000 in cash on hand.

Perhaps her supporters want to grow that figure to discourage any possible opponents, eh?

The seantor will turn 68 on Nov. 3.
